We seek applications from excellently qualified and highly motivated young researchers. Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in a research-oriented Master’s program in Economics, Philosophy or Political Science or in an interdisciplinary Master’s program involving these disciplines. The Master’s program should be closely related to the graduate program. On completion of the Master’s degree (including a Bachelor's degree) applicants must have reached the equivalent of 300 ECTS points. The Master’s degree must have been awarded by a recognized university or equivalent institution of higher education.
We particularly encourage candidates with an interest in the following topics to apply: the role of AI and digital technology in collective decision-making, theories of causation, epistemology, behavioral and experimental economics.
Applicants must have an excellent command of English. This will be verified during the interviews with shortlisted candidates.

- Tabular curriculum vitae.
- Personal statement that outlines the candidate’s general academic interests and the fit with the graduate program “Collective Decision-Making”.
- Outline of a research project the candidate would like to pursue (about 1000 words).
- Copies of degree certificate(s) and transcripts of record for previous studies (Bachelor and Master).
- Two academic reference letters.
- Substantial academic writing sample of about 5000 words (e.g. an excerpt of the candidate’s master’s thesis or a term paper).
Submission of Application

Applicants will be shortlisted for an interview on the basis of the submitted application documents. Online interviews with shortlisted candidates will be scheduled in May or June 2023.
The final selection will be made after personal interviews with all shortlisted candidates. An essential part of the interview will be a requirement for the candidates to give a short presentation on a topic related to the graduate program "Collective Decision-Making" which will be set by the selection committee.
I will not complete my master until after the application deadline. Can I still apply?
Yes, but you will need to have your degree by September 30, 2023.
Is the financial support a scholarship?
No. You will be an employee of Universität Hamburg, which includes all social, healthcare, and pension contributions and benefits.
Is there family support?
Yes. As an employee of Universität Hamburg you will receive statutory family subsidies as part of your salary depending upon your marital status and number of children. You will also be entitled to statutory maternity and parental leave. Universität Hamburg is a certified "Family Friendly University" and offers day-care and kindergarten facilities. Is the financial support restricted to 3 years?
Yes. In exceptional circumstances an extension can be applied for.
Do I have to be present on campus?
Yes. As an employee of Unversität Hamburg you are expected to be present on campus (except if you are on an official research stay abroad).
